But the measure is compressed capacity delivered by vendors, not data actually written by customers, and one quarter of growth cannot be assigned to AI alone.
The annual report from the LTO group of HPE, IBM, and Quantum puts full-year 2025 shipments at 160.3EB, down 9% from 176.5EB in 2024 but still the format's second-highest annual total [1]. The first-quarter increase followed continued LTO-9 shipments and early LTO-10 adoption. Chinese technology outlet IT Home independently reported the same 57% increase and the two-generation context [2].
The figures do not mean tape is replacing flash or hard disks. LTO is designed for large, infrequently accessed retention workloads, and a new higher-capacity medium can lift a capacity-shipment measure during an upgrade cycle. The program names AI training data, archives, and cyber-resilient backup as demand context, not as a quantified split of the increase [1]. The 57% figure therefore establishes faster year-on-year shipment capacity; it does not establish a record year, or that AI was the sole cause.
John Wood's analysis is that the data makes one edge of the storage hierarchy worth closer attention. When high-performance media is prioritized for online workloads, the cost, energy, and capacity pressures in archive and recovery tiers may become more visible. That is an inference from product mix and use-case differences, not a forecast for any storage vendor's revenue or prices. The countercase is equally plausible: if the first quarter mainly reflects a new-media transition or a weak base, growth may ease later in the year.
Watch for whether the LTO Program reports sequential strength in the second quarter, actual LTO-10 penetration, and the mix by media generation. Independent deployment data for archive, backup, and recovery workloads also matters. Only converging evidence on quarterly trend, generation mix, and end use would turn this rebound into a broader data-infrastructure signal rather than a single transition cycle.
